Godly Play Update
Many, many generous people have given of their time and their resources to help get our second Godly Play classroom ready. Thank you, church, for loving our kids so well! Beginning on Sunday, August 19, we’ll have two Godly Play rooms open during Sunday School. Children who are 3 through 2nd grade will remain in the original classroom, while those who are in 3rd-6th grade will move next door to our new room. Parents, this is a great time to start your child attending Sunday School if they haven’t been attending already! We look forward to getting started in our new arrangement!

Young Families Hangouts - Sundays, 6-8 pm
Join us for a laid back time of fellowship. We’ll eat and hang out at someone’s house on a near- weekly basis until school starts.

Late Summer Book Club - August 1 & 8, 10:30am - noon
Kids of all ages are welcome to join us in the Godly Play classroom as we explore connections between favorite kids’ books and Bible stories.

Back to School Blessing - Sunday, August 19 during worship
Be sure to join us in worship for a special time of blessing for students and teachers. You’ll receive a handmade gift to attach to your bag or backpack!

Baptism Class - Coming in September
If there’s interest, we’ll have a baptism class for any children who are interested on Sunday evenings in September (beginning after Labor Day). The content will be different, so children who have participated before are welcome to join us again. Let Amanda know if you have a child who’d like to take part.

Thank you to our summer Sunday School volunteers!

Children’s Help Needed
It takes a lot of people to make children’s ministry great, and we appreciate everyone who invests time and energy into teaching our children about God’s love. Here are some upcoming ways that you can jump in and help:
1. We also have some bookshelves in the children’s area that will be repurposed for the new Godly Play room, and those need to be sanded down and repainted. If that’s your thing, let Amanda know. This needs to be completed by August 12.
2. We’ll pick up with Fall Wednesday night activities the first week of September. If you’d be interested in helping to teach a 3-week class for children, talk to Amanda. There will be plenty of options!
3. We’ve had a baby boom and are in need of some volunteers to join our Wednesday night nursery rotation. If you’d be interested in helping Linda, our wonderful nursery worker, on a monthly basis (or more) from August to December, let Amanda know!

Weekly Schedule Sundays:
Sunday School @ 9:30
Worship @ 10:45
(Nursery available for children under 3 during Sunday School and worship. Extended session available for 3 year olds - kindergarteners during the latter half of worship).
Wednesdays (ending August 8):

VBS is July 9-12 from 5:30-8:30 each evening. We are teaming up with The Presbyterian Church of Danville and Trinity Episcopal for VBS this year. The theme is Amped: Live Fully Alive! Our church needs to provide some small group and activity station leaders. If you’d like to help, let Amanda know!

Summer Sunday School - Sundays, 9:30 am
We’ll follow Illustrated Children’s Ministry’s, “An Illustrated Invitation” curriculum through the summer and learn about how God invites us into God’s story. If you’re a grown-up who’d be willing to teach a week or two, see Amanda for sign-ups!

Young Families Hangouts - Sundays, 6-8 pm
Join us for a laid back time of fellowship. We’ll eat and hang out at someone’s house on a near- weekly basis from June 24 through mid-August. If you’d like to host the young families for an evening, let Amanda know!

Kids of all ages are welcome to join us as we explore connections between favorite kids’ books and Bible stories.

Painting Party - Sunday, July 22
We’ll walk to Subway for lunch after worship and then come back to LABC to paint the Godly Play room. Many hands make the work light!

Help Needed
It takes a lot of people to make children’s ministry great, and we appreciate everyone who invests time and energy into teaching our children about God’s love. Here are some upcoming ways that you can jump in and help:
1. We still need help with Summer Sunday School! If you’d like
to teach a week or two and give our Godly Play teachers a break, let Amanda know. Our summer curriculum is fun and easy to follow!
2. If you have any woodworking skills, there’s lots to do for the new Godly Play room, including smaller bits, like cutting out figures with a scroll saw, and larger projects, like building some bookshelves. If any of that is up your alley, let Amanda know and she’ll get you set up with a project.
3. We also have some bookshelves in the children’s area that will be repurposed for the new Godly Play room, and those need to be sanded down and repainted. If that’s your thing, let Amanda know.
4. If you frequent fabric stores and wouldn’t mind keeping an eye out for some of the harder-to-find felt colors we need to go with some of our Godly Play stories, let Amanda know and she’ll send you a list.
5. If you have baskets (natural colored, preferably), hanging out at your house that could use a new home, consider donating them to our Godly Play room. We keep all of our materials, including art supplies, in baskets, and we’re always looking for more! Baskets without big handles work best, but we’ll take whatever you have! We need a variety of shapes and sizes.

The season of Easter doesn’t last just one day. It goes on for six more Sundays! Young families, watch for the Easter eggs to show up in your yard between now and Pentecost (May 20)! Epiphany is January 6.
We’ll celebrate the arrival of the magi at LABC on Sunday, January 7. Here are some ideas for celebrating Epiphany at home:
(1) Play the scene. Get your nativity scene out and invite your children to bring the characters in one by one, saving the magi for last.
(2) Go stargazing. The magi found the Christ child by following a wild star. Head outside and spend some time studying the stars together.
(3) Bless your home. The magi brought a blessing to Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Your child will bring home instructions for an Epiphany house blessing on January 7.

If you’re interested in answering their questions, let Amanda know!
(2) Would you like to go on an ADVENTure with our children and their families? We’ll spend some time on the first Sunday of Advent (December 3) on a journey through Bethlehem. Children’s Help Needed
It takes a lot of people to make children’s ministry great, and we appreciate everyone who invests time and energy into teaching our children about God’s love. Here are some upcoming ways that you can jump in and help:
(1) Are you interested in learning more about Godly Play? Join us for a workshop at FBC Frankfort on Saturday, October 21 from 9-2 (We’ll carpool). We’ll learn about the philosophy behind Godly Play and have an opportunity to see some of the “Advanced” stories we don’t have yet at our church. Let Amanda know if you’d like to come!
(2) It’s time to start signing up to bring your car for Trunk or Treat! We need individuals or pairs of people who are willing to decorate their trunks and hand out candy to children trick-or-treating in our parking lot on Wednesday, October 25 from 6:30-8. Plan to arrive by 6:15 to get your vehicle in place. If you can bring your own candy and/or prizes to distribute, please do! We had a great crowd from our community last year, so plan on lots of trick-or-treaters.
(3) Can’t decorate your vehicle but still want to help? We need candy (no peanuts or nuts, please) AND small prizes (stickers, pencils, etc.) that we can hand out to children who participate in games organized by our youth. Let Amanda know if you can help!

It’s (Still) Ordinary Time!
In Godly Play, we call these the Great Green Growing Days.
As the days grow shorter, look for time and space to be quiet with God. This can take all kinds of forms: coloring, doodling, writing, working with play-doh or blocks, or just taking a few minutes to be still and silent.

Key for Kids' & Families - September 2017

LABC Steak Out - Wednesday, September 6
Bring a side or dessert to share and join us for our annual church-wide cookout in the parking lot! Weather permitting, the children will head down to the lower lawn for some outdoor games after dinner.

Bring Your Family to Sunday School Day - Sunday, September 24
Children are invited to bring their parent(s) and/or grandparent(s) to Godly Play on this special Sunday. We’ll show families around the Godly Play room and listen together to the story of the Great Family.

Children’s Sunday - Sunday, October 22
Be sure to join us for preparation and rehearsals on October 4 and 18. We’ll plan to lead the congregation in exploring our Children’s Sunday theme: “God Is A Mystery.”

It’s (Still) Ordinary Time!
In Godly Play, we call these the Great Green Growing Days.
During this back-to-school season, try practicing the ancient Christian tradition of the examen together around the dinner table or at bedtime by asking one another these questions:
What was the best part of today?
What was the hardest part of today?
Where did you see God today?

Help Needed
It takes a lot of people to make children’s ministry great, and we appreciate everyone who invests time and energy into teaching our children about God’s love. Here are some upcoming ways that you can jump in and help:
1. We’ll be launching our Wednesday night children’s activities September 13. If you’d be willing to co-teach a 3-week session this fall, let Amanda know. There will be lots of variety, so we can definitely find you a spot that suits your gifts!
2. Are you interested in learning more about Godly Play? Join us for a workshop at FBC Frankfort on Saturday, October 21 from 9-2 (We’ll carpool). We’ll learn about the philosophy behind Godly Play and have an opportunity to see some of the “Advanced” stories we don’t have yet at our church. Let Amanda know if you’d like to come!

Thank You
