Pastor's Pen, October 2013

October has come to us in great beauty. Or at least today October is coming in great beauty.  It is absolutely gorgeous outside.  The sun is bright.  The sky is clear.  There’s just a bit of chill in the air, but not too much.  The trees are beginning to turn their colors.  It is a beautiful day.

Of course not every day is this beautiful.  Some days are quite rainy and cold and miserable.  So today, I intend to soak in all the beauty that I can see. I wish that every day could be this nice, but that’s not going to happen, is it?

So perhaps the challenge for me is not hoping that everyday will be wonderful.  But rather to find ways to see the beautiful in every day.  Someone said “we are not shaped by our circumstances.”  I like to think that is true.  But I also know that I have a different outlook on rainy days than I do on sunny days.

But what if I were to see the beauty even on a rainy day.  My perspective at least would change.  And I suspect my attitude toward life and that day would change as well.  So where do we begin to see beauty all around us.  Maybe it’s in the simple things—the smile of a friend, the laugther of a child, the assurance of knowing that Jesus is with me always.

If we can see the beauty in every day, then perhaps indeed, everyday can be beautiful for us.

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday.
