Operation Christmas Child 2012 (Goal: 300)
We have big plans for our Operation Christmas Child mission this year.  Our goal for Lexington Avenue is 300 boxes.  Please drop by the table in the connecting hall to pick up your materials this Sunday, October 14th.  Each set of materials will be clearly labeled. The brochure labeled boy/girl will contain complete directions on filling the boxes and preparing them for delivery as well as a list of appropriate gifts. It is estimated that for each box received, at least seven family members and friends are touched significantly with the message of Christ’s love. November 12th thru 19th is collection week so time is of the essence.  Please make this mission a significant part of your Christmas celebration. --Linda Kurtz

Christmas Choir Folders Ready

Our Choir just keeps getting better and better. We have a great time at practices and singing for you on Sundays. Would YOU like to help?  Pick up a Christmas Choir Folder/CD  in the Choir Room (on the grand piano), listen to it, and see if you’d like to sing with us on December 16 with the Christmas Choir and Instruments. If not, return it—no questions asked. Try it—I dare you…no, I double-dare you….

Buy a Key/Help Rebuild an Antique Piano!
Each piano key costs $66 to rebuild the Burberry Piano:  a Nineteenth-Century grand piano built in Vienna by the Tomaschek Piano Co, (Opus 732). It is ornate, made from Black Walnut. It is beautiful. It is one of a kind. Now we want to make it sound like new. Please buy a key in memory or honor of someone you love. We’ll put their name on a framed display by the newly refurbished piano. If you have questions, ask Phil or Gail.

LABC Invited to Gethsemane Concert
Last year they came to us for a concert. This year we’ve been graciously invited to Gethsemane Baptist Church for a Gospel Music Gathering on Sunday Evening, October 21, at 6:00 PM (note time change). It’s primarily gospel and hymn music. No charge but a love offering will be taken. A male quartet from our church is singing and some of our choir members will join their choir for a couple of numbers. You won’t want to miss it!

Walking on the “Mild” Side

We will begin walking inside on November 5, 2012. The days will again be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8:30 AM. There is no cost. The activity involves following a walking routine led by Leslie Sansone on a DVD  for approximately 30 minutes, which averages a two mile walk. You can set your own pace until you are comfortable completing the whole walk. Come join us and ask a friend to come with you – the more people, the more fun.

Important Health Information from the Health Ministry Team
New Standards for Prostate Screening. New guidelines released by the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommend against community based prostate cancer screening. Their recommendation is that men consult with their primary care physician to make an informed decision about whether screening is necessary. THE USPSTF recommends men without symptoms, regardless of age, do not need to have the routine prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test screening for prostate cancer. Risk and possible benefits of prostate cancer screening should be discussed with your primary care physician prior to screening. It is recommended that men should not be screened until they have received this information. Starting at age 50, men should talk to a doctor about the pros and cons of testing so they can decide if testing is the right choice for them. If they are African American or have a father or brother who had prostate cancer before age 65, men should have this talk with a doctor starting at age 45. If men decide to be tested, they should have the PSA blood test with or without a rectal exam. How often they are tested will depend on their PSA level.

LABC Tea: “A Cup of Hospitality”
We now have our own Elmwood Inn tea label, “A Cup of Hospitality.” The tea will be given to our guests and available for sale to members. The cost is $10 for a container of 15 tea sachets ($10.50 in most stores) or three for $25, available in the church office. For each container sold, $4.00 goes to our Glocal Missions Offering. The label reads: Since our founding in 1927, Lexington Avenue Baptist Church has sought to blend the core values of heritage, worship, music, prayer, spiritual growth, friendliness, caring and missions to give our congregation a unique flavor. In many cultures, tea has been a symbol of friendship, peace and community for centuries. With that ancient tradition of hospitality in mind, we  offer this caffeine-free tea, blended with delicious aromatic herbs known for soothing both body and spirit. We invite you to become a part of the hospitable spirit of our Christ-centered community. O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. Psalm 34:8 (NRSV).

Box Tops for Education Labels for Oneida

Just a reminder that the Ruth Class continues to collect Box Tops for Education Labels, that we send to Oneida Baptist Institute, Oneida KY. We want to encourage all of our congregation and friends to do the same and bring them to the Ruth Class Sunday School room (302) on the top floor of the education building. You will find them on a multitude of products, but we usually identify them as “soup labels”. The folks at Oneida greatly appreciate them and are able to convert them to much needed items for school. The Ruth class took a field trip in October 2010 to the school and were graciously received. We worshipped with the 6-12 grade student body and faculty, had a wonderful lunch in the cafeteria, were hosted around the grounds and farm, and shopped in the craft shop. Ruth Class President, Joanne Key, presented President Underwood with our annual monetary Christmas gift. We were greatly blessed and impressed with the students, faculty and staff. We welcome your help in this Ruth Class tradition.--Paula Scott and the Ruth Class
