Pastor's Pen, January 2012

“I know the plans I have in mind for you, declares the LORD; they are plans for peace, not disaster, to give you a future filled with hope” (Jeremiah 29:11 CEB).

As we begin a new year, this verse has been on my mind.  It’s one of my favorite in the Bible. It’s a promise from God to the prophet Jeremiah who, if you know his story, need a word of encouragement from God. And this promise, I believe, always offers that encouragement.

As I have reflected on it the past several days these thoughts come to mind. First, God knows what God is doing.  Sometimes I have to stop and remind myself.  Yet the life of faith is one in which Christ followers trust God. That’s what God is saying isn’t it. “I know what I am doing,” God says, “so trust me.” Let’s remember that truth this year.

Let’s also remember that what God is doing is for us. We are the object of God’s love.  We find that truth throughout the Bible.  Maybe the start of a new year is a good time to be reminded of this truth.

And finally, God wants our future filled with hope. Hope is not wishful thinking. Hope is believing that there is another day yet to dawn and God is already at work to bring that day to you.

Let’s take this verse to heart. Let’s claim it as our own.  Let’s journey into 2012 with God’s hope sustaining us in each step of this exciting journey.

Come join us for worship and Bible study this Sunday and let’s see together these things God has planned for us.

With Hope,
