…and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart . . .Jeremiah 15:16

In June, Women on Mission went to the Galilean Home in Liberty, Kentucky.  It was a wonderful and inspiring trip.  The residents met us with smiles and gifts.  They gave us a tour of the home and grounds and seemed to be so proud of the facilities.

And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord.  Psalm 35:9

Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere, Go, tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born.

“Go, Tell it on the Mountain” was printed in a 1907 publication by Thomas Fenner.  It was entitled “Christmas Plantation Song” and was among folk songs that were sung on the plantation.

Here are excerpts from a story written by Brooke Keith, about her experience as a child of being in her church outdoor Christmas Drama.  Apparently it included not only the birth of Christ, but also his death.  I hope it speaks to you:

As a child, I remember sitting for hours amongst the winter’s chill, beneath the starry skies, adorned in a long blue sheet, held up by an old rope belt, reciting the lines of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.”   Luke 2:10

Our endless tasks to celebrate Christmas often takes away our joy.

When I was growing up in Springfield Baptist Church the Christmas program, last Sunday night before Christmas, was very important.  Then Sunday afternoon rehearsals.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord . . . serve the Lord with gladness; come before his presence with singing.  Psalm 100:1

The joy of Christmas is when family and friends and grandkids come over and we will decorate the tree and hang ornaments and sing Christmas songs and sit by the fireplace  and eat cookies.  We just talk about things and just have fun watching the kids open their presents and play with them and have fun with their toys.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them (shepherds) and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be to all people.”   Luke 2:9-10

The joy that was ushered into the world at the arrival of Jesus was not intended to be for one day or one season of the year.  It was to be for our entire life’s journey and then for eternity!

Paul explains it best in his letter to the Philippians.  Joy is the theme of this letter.  He was writing from prison.  So, what was the secret of his joy?

JOY AT THE FARMER’S HOUSE

The Christmas traditions for the Farmers begin with “The Hanging of the Green”. This ceremony is for all the young at heart at LABC. Advent is always a magical time for me. The Christmas music with choir and orchestra, the children’s Christmas play, the hearing of the Christmas story, as if for the first time, at the Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve.
