Monday, Second Week of Advent: Peace
December 8, 2014
“ 'Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed.' Says the Lord who has compassion on you." Isaiah 54:10
Recently, I was dusting a cabinet, picking up small items and dusting each one, when one particular item caught my attention. It was a small wooden tray with three candles surrounded by smooth stones. Two of the stones had been painted with the words “Peace” and Love.” I had bought the set for the candles, not especially
for the inscribed stones. I had found the stones mildly amusing, a throwback to the 60’s or 70’s, but I had kept them in the tray nonetheless. However, as I examined the stones, I wondered what prompted the designer of this decorative piece to include the stones painted with these particular words. Then I had this thought – true peace cannot be achieved apart from love. Peace and love are, indeed, inseparable. We cannot experience peace within unless we receive God’s unfailing love into our hearts and lives.
God has always passionately pursued His children, making a way for us to experience His perfect love and peace in our fractured and fragmented lives. The birth of Jesus Christ is God’s ultimate gift of love that when unwrapped and embraced fills our hearts and minds with the peace that defies understanding.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to receive your love and peace into our hearts and lives and share that gift with everyone we meet. Amen.
