Monday, Third Week of Advent: Joy
December 15, 2014

An angel of the Lord appeared to them (shepherds) and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.  I bring you good news of great joy that will be to all people.”   Luke 2:9-10

The joy that was ushered into the world at the arrival of Jesus was not intended to be for one day or one season of the year.  It was to be for our entire life’s journey and then for eternity!
Paul explains it best in his letter to the Philippians.  Joy is the theme of this letter.  He was writing from prison.  So, what was the secret of his joy?  The secret was his relationship to Christ!  Forty times he mentions his beloved Saviour’s name.
Many people will celebrate the Christmas season, however, that does not mean that they will experience the “joy” of knowing Jesus as Saviour and Lord!
I have noticed in my fifty plus years of pastoral ministry that many people become cynical and pessimistic as they grow older.  I have now grown older!  I hope this has not and will not happen to me.  How can we remain joyful to the end of life’s journey?  The author of Hebrews says “Keep your eyes on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith . . . who for the ‘joy’ set before Him endured the cross (Heb.12:2). For Jesus and His followers the best is always in the future.  The joy we experience here is only a foretaste of the everlasting joy we will experience in heaven!

Prayer:  Heavenly Father thank you for sending your son to be our Saviour and providing joy for our journey through this life!  Thank you Jesus for your willingness to die for me and therefore I can live and die with full assurance of everlasting joy!  Amen.
