Fourth Week of Advent: Love
Monday, December 24, 2012

Christmas Eve is a magical time.  All that we have dreamed about and hoped for during these last few weeks finally comes together.  We may not get that present we wished for but somehow that doesn’t matter now.  There is something more for us this night.  There is something greater, more enduring, more meaningful, if we can just open our lives to receive it.  It is the gift of Christ for each and every one of us.

For some of us that gift brings hope to our lives.  For some of us the gift surrounds us with God’s peace.  For others, there is a profound joy present this day.  And for some we find ourselves embraced in God’s love.

Dr. Tommy Valentine

In the 1800’s John Neale translated the words that would become the hymn we now know as
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”  One verse contains these words:

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

The season of Advent is filled with many emotions as expressed in the words of this hymn.  All
of them are connected to the hope, peace, joy and love that fill our lives as we anticipate Christ’s return.
