First Week of Advent: Hope
Tuesday, December 4, 2012
What is it, anyway?
Hope. Is that the same thing as wishful thinking? No way!
Oh, but “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.” (Hebrews 11:1 KJV) Isn’t that the same thing as wishful thinking? No way! Then, please explain the difference.
Gladly! Wishful thinking is what we would like to have but have no way of being sure we will get it. For example, when I was a child, I hoped Santa would bring me a bicycle for Christmas. However, when I got up on Christmas morning and looked for it, it simply was not there – nor was it hidden somewhere for me to find. Hope on the other hand is backed up by a promise so sure that what we hope for might as well be ours already. Hope is based on what God promises us, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ.” (2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV)
