Christmas Day, December 25
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
Growing up in church, John 3:16 was a verse that I frequently heard. I memorized it in Sunday school, recited it in Bible school, and heard it spoken many times in our pastor’s sermons. However, I don’t think I understood the depth of the love that this verse speaks of until I became a mother. As a parent, you try to keep your children safe, care for them physically, and love them unconditionally. My heart is so full of love for my children that I would willingly lay down my own life to protect them.
As I reflect on the miracle of Christmas, I can’t help but think of the tremendous sacrifice that God made. God’s love is so special and pure that it is difficult to comprehend. A love so great that he sent His one and only perfect Son into this world to live amongst us. He sent Him knowing that He would eventually be mocked, tortured, and killed. He sent Him because he loves me…small, imperfect, and sinful me. I can’t imagine sending one of my children into harms way. But that’s what God did. He loves and cares for each one of us so deeply that he sacrificed his only Son, so that we could join him in heaven someday. God’s love for each one of us is constant, perfect, and unselfish.
Therefore, on days that you are feeling discouraged, lonely, worthless or unloved…remember how much God loves YOU. No matter how flawed we are, God’s love for us is true and absolute. And all we have to do is receive it.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for showing us what genuine love is and for the wonderful gift that you gave us on Christmas morning.
