Third Week of Advent: Joy
Wednesday, December 19, 2012

“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.  Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.”  Psalm 96:1-2

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.  Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.  Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people; the sheep of his pasture.  Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.  For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100

We do not take the time to think about the Joy in our lives today.  There are reports of people killing each other, destruction of lives and property and the nation has suffered through a recession that has touched us all.  We are recovering slowly and God will get us through these times.
The Christmas season seems to start earlier each year.  It is one of the most joyful times of the year and has become so commercialized that the spirit of the season puts too much emphasis on gifts and the real reason for the season gets put aside.  It is one of my favorite times of the year and brings families together.  Christmas Eve services are one of my favorite times at church.  Silent Night in the candlelight is not only a Joyful time but one of the most peaceful times as well.
Lexington Avenue is very fortunate to have great music.  Listening to Christmas music is one of my favorite parts of the season.  Joy To The World is one of my favorite Christmas carols.  My grandparents on both sides were involved in church music in some way.  I love the old hymns and I believe they not only bring us Joy but they teach us as well.
Take time to listen to your favorite hymn or carol and sit back and relax as you listen.  Experience the Joy in God’s word through music.  God is with you no matter where you are or what you are doing.

Prayer: Lord, may we start and end each day with you.  The circumstances in today’s world make us look for ways to bring Joy, Love, Peace and Hope to our lives.  We know we will have these as long as we are with you and have you as part of our lives.  Thank you for the music brought to us by the many talented people in our midst.  Be with all of us during this holiday season and guide us to bring Joy to those around us. Be with those who have lost loved ones and will experience their first holiday season without them.  May we all find Joy, Love, Peace and Hope this holiday season and everyday.  Amen.
