The Greatest Gift

As a young teenager I watched my Dad paint a life-size picture of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Dad completed the painting in three days; it was an awesome experience for us both.  He had explained to me that several years before he had started another picture of Christ but didn’t have the courage to paint the face of Jesus.  Now, Dad told me he had a lot more confidence and felt qualified to do this painting.  Dad had a tremendous gift of talent and explained to me that Jesus was God’s greatest gift to the world.

I took a close friend to show her the painting and as she gazed at it, tears filled her eyes at the wonder of it.  This gift was meant to be shared and we are to share our own talents with others, be it through a smile or some other talent we possess as a gift from God.  Who we are is a gift from God, who we become is our gift to God.  He reflects His love through us.  Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.  Have a Merry Christmas; we’ve already been given the greatest gift on earth.

The painting is hanging in Alexander Royalty Funeral Home in Harrodsburg, Kentucky.  Artist is H. R. Hayes; year 1947.
